Description:
The Museum of the Great Southern is a heritage museum precinct on Residency Road in Albany, occupying the site of Western Australia's first European settlement, established 1826. The precinct overlooks Princess Royal Harbour and comprises several distinct physical environments: the restored colonial Residency Building, formerly home to the colony's government administrators; the Eclipse Building, a contemporary gallery volume used for rotating exhibitions; ancillary heritage structures including the Co-op Building and original School Room; and the full-scale outdoor replica of the Brig Amity, the convict ship that made the voyage from Sydney to King George Sound in 1826. The museum is managed by the Western Australian Museum. Located on Residency Road, Albany, approximately 430 km (267 mi) or 4h 30-min south of Perth CBD via the Albany Highway. Perth Film Studios is approximately 4h 30-min north.
