Description:Avalon beach commences on the northern side of the beachrock reef. The reef continues north as the shoreline curves to the east forming a protected 1.2 km long west-facing embayment. Waves break on the reef, which lies up to 200 m offshore, and can produce a lefthand break. At the shore low wave to calm conditions usually prevail. The beach is backed by a foredune, then in the south the Northport development then a beachfront car park, while at the northern end is the older Avalon settlement, a car park and boat ramp. The beach width can vary considerable when sand is being pumped across the channel and onto the beach.
