Description:Gwalia is a former gold-mining town located 233 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie and 828 kilometres east of Perth in Western Australia's Great Victoria Desert. Today, Gwalia is essentially a ghost town, having been largely deserted since the main source of employment, the Sons of Gwalia gold mine, closed in 1963. Just four kilometres north is the town of Leonora, a 5minute drive which remains the hub for the area's mining and pastoral industries. The town of Leonora consists of a supermarket, butcher, and café, two service stations, a motel, two hotels and a caravan park provide accommodation, take-away food and dining facilities. The town also have a pharmacy and Op Shop. Townspeople make use of a large grassed oval, bowls club, gun club and racetrack, for recreation. Leonora boasts a recreation centre where all indoor sports are catered for with a state of the art Aquatic centre and gym attached. Leonora is a 2.5 hour drive north of Kalgoorlie. Kalgoorlie is a 1 hour flight or a 6.5 hour drive east of Perth.
