Description:The massive man made Lake Argyle is situated in the east of the Kimberley, near to the Northern Territory border and is the biggest man made lake in the southern hemisphere. The damming of the Ord River was completed in 1972 however this is not just another dam, it's classified as an inland sea and at its peak in the green season Lake Argyle holds a staggering 32 million cubic metres of water. That's more than 20 times the size of Sydney Harbour. The tips of the mountains of the surrounding Carr Boyd Ranges tumble into the lake making it look like some kind of strange desert fjord. Away towards the horizon small mountains rise out of the lake like islands. There are over 70 islands throughout the lake. Lake Argyle's climate changes throughout the year and provides a varying difficulty month-to-month for contestants. The most hospitable months are between late April and September where daily temperature maximums are 20°Cs (68°F) to low 30°Cs (86°F) and nightly minimums range above 10°Cs (50°F). October to December is exceptionally hot and harsh with powerful thunderstorms and heavy rain in isolated areas. Maximum temperatures at this time can reach low 40°Cs (104°F). January to early April is monsoonal and will be difficult due to high rainfall and humidity with high 30°Cs (86°F) maximums.
