Katanning

Australia / Katanning, Western Australia
Location ID: #10308250

Katanning is a thriving, multicultural agricultural hub in Western Australia’s Great Southern region, located 2.5 hours south of Perth. Originally a Noongar gathering place (meaning "head sits here"), it was officially gazetted in 1898 and became a, thriving, innovative town known for its early adoption of electric streetlights, the Piesse family's flour mill, and its development as a "blue-wool" agricultural centre. Today Katanning is known for sheep and wheat farming, including hosting the Southern Hemisphere’s largest roofed sheep saleyards. Katanning provides quality facilities to residents from neighbouring towns such as Broomehill - Tambellup, Kojonup, Woodanilling, Wagin, Dumbleyung, Gnowangerup and Nyabing.

Katanning is part of the magnificent Great Southern Treasures, which covers a collection of hinterland Shires of the Great Southern Region. These communities are predominantly recognised for the primary industry of agriculture from broad acre cropping, sheep for wool and meat production, viticulture, silviculture and horticulture.
