Surfers Point
Australia / Prevelly, Western Australia
Location ID: #10207485
Surfers Point is known as one of the best ‘big wave’ locations on the planet – on par with Hawaii. Between March and April it hosts in the Margaret River Pro World Championships, where you can watch the world’s top surfers pit their skills on the barrels and big peaks (some reaching over 12 feet).
From Margaret River, it’s just a ten-minute drive west to Surfers Point, in Prevelly, or three hours and 30 minutes from Perth. You can even take in this dramatic coastline one step at a time by joining the Cape to Cape Track. The 135-kilometre trail leads you through karri forests, wildflowers and rugged headlands to sandy beaches and enchanting caves.
For surfers, the Mainbreak at Surfers Point is the big drawcard. Try the powerful lefts and rights at Southsides, the thick hollow wave known as The Box, or catch the big tow-in wave – the Bombie.
If you’d prefer to watch the action from dry land, there are plenty of vantage points with sweeping views of the breaks. Large carparks and tiered grassy areas make this a wonderful place to visit and view the waves, and the surfers riding them.
The beach itself curves around the point with the waves reaching the bottom of the dune stairs with swells at high tide.
